1 Hydro Electric Energy By: Leo & Clint

2 What Hydroelectric Energy is
Hydroelectric Energy is a type of energy created by having a dam on a river and is put in a reservoir. Water released from the reservoir flows through a turbine, spinning it, which in turn activates a generator to produce electricity. What Hydroelectric Energy is

3 Interesting Facts about Hydroelectric Energy
Hydropower generates about 24 percent of the world's and 12 percent of the United States' electricity. Each year the use of hydroelectric energy increases by 3%. The Hoover Dam can power 8 million homes. ¾ of Washington is powered by hydroelectric energy. Interesting Facts about Hydroelectric Energy

4 The Cost of Hydropower On average it cost 20 million dollars to build a dam. In the U.S., hydropower is produced for an average of 0.85 cents per kilowatt-hour. This is about 50% the cost of nuclear, 40% the cost of fossil fuel, and 25% the cost of using natural gas. It takes 10 million dollars to maintain a dam.

5 Why Hydropower is Better Than Other Energy Sources
Hydropower is fueled by water, so it's a clean fuel source, meaning it won't pollute the air like power plants that burn fossil fuels, such as coal or natural gas. Hydropower is a safe way of making energy unlike nuclear power where spills happen and take decades to go back to normal. Hydropower is better than solar power because solar power does not always have an extreme energy output, such as a cloudy day. Hydropower is better than wind power because wind power only creates energy when there is wind and they kill birds. Hydropower is better than geothermal energy because geothermal energy can cause earthquakes from hydraulic fracturing. Hydropower is better than biofuel because hydropower does not create greenhouse gases. Why Hydropower is Better Than Other Energy Sources

6 How Hydropower Affects the Environment
Hydropower does not pollute the water or the air. However, hydropower facilities can have large environmental impacts by changing the environment and aff ecting land use, homes, and natural habitats in the dam area. How Hydropower Affects the Environment

7 Why Hydropower can be Useful in our Area
Hydropower would be extremely useful in our area because of the huge river than runs through where we live. The dam would power so many towns and cities.
