1 Human Body How we Do What we do

2 TISSUES Connective: Muscle: Nervous: Epithelial:
Cells that form the body’s structure Muscle: Enables the body to move and has the ability to contract Nervous: Made of neurons that carry electrical messages Epithelial: Lines the inner and outer body surfaces to protect the body and its organs. Secretes substances like hormones Absorbs substances like nutrients

3 ORGAN SYSTEMS INTEGUMENTARY:
Provides a barrier between the body and the external environment Skin, hair, nails Layers of Skin: Epidermis—dead skin cells are found here Dermis Hypodermis

4 ORGAN SYSTEMS SKELETAL:
Moves and supports body; protects internal organs Bones, cartilage, ligaments The human body has 206 bones in the body

5 ORGAN SYSTEMS DIGESTIVE:
Breaks down food into nutrients the body can use; disposes of solid waste Mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine, rectum, liver, pancreas, gallbladder Digestion begins in the mouth Food enters the esophagus, then small intestine, then large intestine mouth esophagus liver stomach pancreas small large rectum

6 ORGAN SYSTEMS RESPIRATORY:
Exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide between the body and external environment Nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs The lungs are the main organ in the respiratory system

7 ORGAN SYSTEMS CIRCULATORY:
Transports oxygen, nutrients, and other needed materials to cells; transports waste away from cells Heart, blood vessels The heart is an involuntary cardiac muscle.

8 ORGAN SYSTEMS NERVOUS:
Detects and responds to changes in the environment; transmits information as electrochemical impulses throughout the body Communication Brain, spinal cord, nerves The cerebrum helps with thinking and memory

9 ORGAN SYSTEMS MUSCULAR: Moves the body and materials through the body
Skeletal muscles, cardiac muscle, smooth muscle, tendons Involuntary and voluntary
