1
Describe what you think the word ‘network’ means?
Do you think networks are simple or complex or both? Explain.
2
What are your ideas about evolution
What are your ideas about evolution? How do you believe that the current life forms on Earth came to exist as we see them today?
3
Evidence for Evolution
Geological Time and Radiometric Dating Fossil record DNA comparison Comparative anatomy Evolution observed
4
Title a new page in your notebook
Geological Time
5
Evolution the process by which different kinds of living organisms are thought to have developed and diversified from earlier forms during the history of the earth
6
Geological time Scientists have distinguished historical eras, or ages in geological time, such as the Archaean era and the Proterozoic era. The eras are further divided into periods, such as the Cambrian period Silurian period, and epochs based on when major changes in plants and animals occurred. Scientists learn about these changes by observing fossils. Eras Periods Epochs
7
Key terms Geological time/ Deep Time:
the vast time scale of billions of years, related to the geological and evolutionary history of the earth. Geology is the study of the solid Earth; its physical structure
8
Key Terms Bya.= a billion Mya. = a million
9
Taxa
11
Where on our timeline did these occur?
First cells were preserved in the fossil record Dinosaurs went extinct “Ardi” lived
12
Ardi Ardipithecus ramidus First discovered in 1994 in Ethiopia
Provides evidence about the evolution of humans The ‘Ardi’ skeleton reflects a human-African ape common ancestor that was not chimpanzee-like
