3 SharePoint – What’s it all about?
SharePoint is a powerful platform What version of SharePoint? SharePoint Foundation SharePoint Standard SharePoint Enterprise SharePoint Online (cloud) How do you want to use it? Communication Content Collaboration Activity (tasks) Licensing SharePoint Foundation – free w/Windows Server; base of SharePoint operations SharePoint Standard – audience targeting, web analytics, MySites (profiles), faceted search, enterprise wiki, social tags & notes SharePoint Enterprise – BI Integration, Dashboards, Business Data, Power Pivot, Performance Point, Access/Visio/Excel/InfoPath services, search extension SharePoint Online – cloud-based offering; could be challenging if integrating with LOB applications

4 Under the Hood (very simplified)
SharePoint Farm Could be 1 server (SharePoint in a box) or many servers Site Collection has one or many sites and subsites A Site Collection is contained in 1 content database A Content Database can ‘house’ more than 1 site collection, but a site collection cannot span multiple content databases Why important? Need to plan appropriately. A content database is a SQL database – if you need to restore a SQL database, how long will it take to restore a backup of a really large database? What is your SLA?

6 Walk the Walk Let’s take a look! Site Contact Resource Site
At Faegre Baker Daniels, Site Contacts are the content owners for each site. This is a site that we have created to help them with learning/training on SharePoint skills. Before we dig in, some comments/observations about our SharePoint environment: Branding – this is not OOB SharePoint Master Pages and CSS (styling) can be modified to provide a SharePoint environment that matches your firm’s standards. Navigation – use breadcrumb to show site structure Business decision around when to create a site/subsite – for us, quite permissions based Various site templates – we largely use Publishing sites because they allow for drafting/review process and have better control over navigation, but certainly not the only choice Other common templates include Team Sites, Project Sites, My Site, Search Take apart this page – what are we looking at? Chrome Web Parts Left navigation
