CHAPTER 7 – END QUESTIONS
As you moved around campus you noticed many cool kinds of trees, flowers and shrubs, next time you go across campus take a look at their leaves and ask yourself why they are the way they are – where on a tree do you find the leaves? why? You notice that the grass, the shrubs, the trees, etc, tend to be pretty green, why do you think this is so? As you admire the trees and you see sunlight splashing across the leaves, ask yourself: what is going on inside that leaf? what is the leaf using the energy of the sun for? how are electrons involved? We all like to eat fruit and other sweet things, plant products that contain sugar, so how do plants produce this sugar? where do they produce it? what raw materials are required? Imagine that you are a plant living in the desert, what are your biggest concerns? how might you solve them and ensure your continued success? Global warming via the greenhouse effect is a serious problem and we could certainly build some really cool machines to remove carbon dioxide from the air but is there perhaps a simpler, cheaper solution?
