1 HOPI Update Rick Summerhill
Director, Network Research, Architecture, and Technologies, Internet2 Joint Techs Salt Lake City, UT 24 November 2018

2 HOPI Project - Summary In the near future we will see a richer set of capabilities available to network designers and end users Core IP packet switched networks A set of optically switched waves available for dynamic provisioning Fundamental Question: How will the core Internet architecture evolve? Examine a hybrid of shared IP packet switching and dynamically provisioned optical lambdas HOPI Project – Hybrid Optical and Packet Infrastructure Have created a whitepaper – see Immediate Goals Implement testbed over the next year Coordinate and experiment with other similar projects Design Team, Corporate Advisory Team 11/24/2018

9 HOPI Milestone: Force10 Networks Ethernet Technologies
Internet2 is pleased to announce that Force10 Networks has been selected to provide Ethernet switches for the HOPI nodes Superb technology - Force10 is a pioneering leader in 10 Gig Ethernet switches Shared vision on new technologies - Force10’s technical expertise will play a significant role in the evolution of the HOPI testbed and the understanding of new architectures. Force10 Networks will play a significant role as an Internet2 corporate partner Strong partnership - Force10’s willingness and enthusiasm in partnering with Internet2 on the HOPI project and the evolution of the next generation network 11/24/2018

10 Force10 and HOPI By deploying Force10 E-Series equipment in the HOPI nodes, Internet2 will have the essential infrastructure to execute the HOPI testbed strategy Equipment will be deployed into five nodes including: Seattle, Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles and in Washington D.C. The Force10 E-Series will provide dense Gigabit Ethernet connectivity with 10 Gigabit Ethernet uplinks to Abilene, NLR, and other projects The nationwide testbed design will allow participants to experiment with new networking technologies such as dynamically provisioned bandwidth and hybrid technologies. 11/24/2018

11 Additional Activities
Internet2 is also happy to announce participation by HP HP will provide servers for control plane, measurement, and support activities. Expect a more formal announcement in the very near future Internet2 is still reviewing optical equipment to be placed in the HOPI nodes Each node will include: an Ethernet switch with 10GigE capabilities, a fiber cross connect switch, and servers to control HOPI’s network infrastructure and measure network performance, all designed to model future optical infrastructures. It is intended to be an open testbed facility. Call for HOPI Testbed Support Center Provide NOC functions Development of control plane activities Provide model for future management and administration of hybrid networks Deadline March 11, 2005 11/24/2018
