1 Climate Connections Geo 20F

2 Weather & Climate Weather: conditions of our atmosphere over a short period of time Daily conditions Rain, snow, sun, cloudy

3 Examples of Weather Websites

4 Weather & Climate Climate: conditions of our atmosphere over a long period of time Months, seasons Average annual precipitation

5 Weather & Climate Give examples of how both weather & climate affect our lives

6 Canada’s Climate Canada extends for a great distance north to south
Different elevations produce different climate conditions Coastal regions have different climates from inland regions Wind & pressure systems move weather conditions from one part of the country to another Fig

7

8 Factors Affecting Climate
Latitude Relief & Elevation Ocean Currents Air Masses

9 Latitude measures how far you are north or south of the equator

10 Latitude Copy Fig 11-3. (page 123) The Effects of latitude on Climate
Using the diagram as a guide, explain why areas far from the equator experience colder temperatures than places near the equator

11 Latitude Latitude determines the amount of solar energy received by that region Regions close to the equator receive direct rays of the sun and therefore receive more radiant energy and are warmer At the areas closer to the poles, the suns rays are at an angle so these areas receive less radiant energy and are cooler

12 Elevation Elevation is the distance above sea level
As you go higher up a mountain, temperature drops

13 Ocean Currents Water in the ocean travels in paths called currents.
Currents can either be warm or cold If the water is cold, it cools the air above it. If it is warm, it heats up the air above it

14

15 Canada’s Ocean Currents
Labrador Current (East Coast) Gulf Stream (East Coast) North Pacific (West Coast)

16 Canadian Ocean Currents

17

18

19 Air Masses Large volume of air
Contains moisture when forming over the ocean As it passes over land precipitation results

20 Canada’s Climate Regions
An area with a temperature range greater than 25 degrees would have a _________________________ climate An area with a temperature range less than 25 degrees would have a ___________________________ climate
