In March 2012, the State University Libraries of Florida selected Islandora as the common digital library platform. Implementation challenges: Varying degrees of experience with digital library platforms Varying amounts of content to be migrated from previous platforms Varying degrees of in-house support Facilitating collaboration and compromise
6
Varying degrees of experience with digital library platforms
State colleges = little to no experience building digital collections Universities = had experience or bring in someone with experience Ultimately no one from any of the institutions had experience with Islandora The universities along with FLVC would implement Islandora, creating the structure and the standards which would then be provided to the state colleges.
7
Varying amounts of content to be migrated from previous platforms
Digitool, ContentDM, Sobek Digitool Migration · FSU: 16,000 objects · FAMU: objects · FAU: 9,000 objects · UCF: 1,000 objects · FGCU: 2,000 objects
8
Varying degrees of in-house support
FSU had a developer to dedicate to the implementation & a web designer to assist FLVC The rest of us didn’t Have FSU work with FLVC and Discovery Garden; share resources!
9
Facilitating collaboration and compromise
Multi-teared collaboration = 11 universities > FLVC > Discovery Garden Needed: Tools Documentation Patience
12
Additional Tools Weekly meetings Glossary of terms
Ranking features - readdress annually Issue tracking - priority FL Islandora listserv
15
~Things we kept in mind~
decision making process continually asked “Is this sustainable long term?” If no, Don’t do it! cost effective - DGI services continuity of multiple university sites sites go live one at a time allowing for changes to be made while still having DGI services don’t reinvent the wheel
17
Pros not sitting in the boat alone mix of experience and perspectives
FLVC developers allowed all universities to implement sites FLVC will populate our catalogs with Islandora content & add content to FDA Cost sharing of DGI services
18
Cons compromise for continuity lack of access to form builder
do not have instant access to all of Islandora’s capabilities - file tickets migration issues
19
Assess to the Form Builder
22
What is next? FGCU and FAU go live with sites in the next few months.
Other universities are continuing to develop their instance. Will begin collective development of IslandScholar. The State Colleges will begin learning about Islandora Wish us luck!
