Who is a DBA? There are three (or two, depending on one’s perspective) types of databases OLTP OLAP DW/DSS (These latter two are structurally very similar) 11/24/2018 ISYS366, Database Administration II

Introduction to three types of computing
OLTP This is the sort of data entry that you might find in a large catalog vendor, like L.L.Bean. There are large amounts of data input and updates. The querying done against this database is generally done to find whether an item is in stock (perhaps against one relatively small table) or to create an invoice (generally against no more than three or four tables). All data is current. 11/24/2018 ISYS366, Database Administration II

Introduction to three types of computing
OLAP This sort of computing uses statistics heavily. The user is analyzing data in the database. There are lots of complex queries, but little or no inserts or updates. DSS/DW This is the sort of computing that executives and business people do to determine long term trends in their data. Queries are generally very complex. The only time data gets put in is when it is initially loaded.Historical data. 11/24/2018 ISYS366, Database Administration II

Basic Duties of the DBA Here are some of the basic roles of the Oracle DBA. This is not an all-inclusive list. Depending on your installation and staff, your duties might not include all of these, or might include many more items. Installation of new software Configuration of hardware and software with the system administrator Security administration Performance tuning and monitoring Backup and recovery Routine scheduled maintenance Troubleshooting Failure recovery Communicating with a diverse audience 11/24/2018 ISYS366, Database Administration II

Additional Duties of the DBA
Some of the more advanced duties of the Oracle DBA might include the following: Data analysis Database design (preliminary) Data modeling and optimization Assisting developers with SQL and stored procedure dev Enterprise standards and naming conventions Development of production migration procedures Environmental documentation Consult with development team and end users Evaluation of new hardware and software Capacity planning and sizing 11/24/2018 ISYS366, Database Administration II

Who is a DBA? Now combine the duties of a DBA with the different types of databases, and layer them on top of different (O)RDBMSs or data warehousing systems, and you have a general idea of what this guy/gal is, and why they command the big bucks! 11/24/2018 ISYS366, Database Administration II
