2. Lesson One
Community: group of people who live or work together in the same place
Citizen: a person who lives in and belongs to a community

3. Reasons people live in a community:
To belong – enjoy doning things with others
To work – live close to where they work
To have fun – fun activities to enjoy in people’s free time

4. Goods: Things that can be bought or sold
Biography: story of a person’s life
Walt Disney is best known for his theme parks but he was also very inventive

5. Lesson Two
Needs: Things we all must have – food, clothing and place to live
In a community, people have different skills.
People use their different skill in their jobs.
Living in a community helps people save time because of their different skill.

6. Depend: rely on one another for safety
Service: work that someone does for someone else
Examples of service: police, firefighters, doctors, nurses
Schools and Libraries are important to a community as they are places to learn.

7. Pictograph: a graph that uses pictures or symbols to stand for the number of things
Bar graph: uses bars of different lengths to stand for the numbers of things

8. Lesson Three
Custom: way of doing something
Example : we shake hands when greeting someone - Japan greet people by bowing to them
Culture: customs and beliefs that members of a group share
Example: seen in clothing, language and music

9. Ethnic Group: group of people who have the same language and culture and share a way of life
Each ethnic group brings some of its culture to the community - with their food or music

10. Holiday: A special day for remembering a person or an event that is important to the people of a community
Examples: Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Labor Day
Eagle, Colorado celebrates “Flight Days” when young eagles get their flight feathers.

11. Lesson Four
Cooperate: work together to keep their community a safe and peaceful place to live
Laws: rules that a community makes
Consequence: what happens because of what a person does
Examples of consequences – hurt in an accident, pay a fine, go to jail

12. Community Government
Government: group of people who makes the laws
Mayor: leader of community government who’s job is to see that the community’s problems are solved
Judges: people from the community who are chosen to work as leaders in the courts. Must treat people fairly( treat everyone the same that is right and honest)

13. Being a Responsible Citizen
Responsibility: something a person should do because it is necessary and important
One responsibility all citizens have is to Obey the Laws
Peace: time of quiet and calm
