1 11th Grade Parent Meeting
October 27, 2011

2 Why are we here? This meeting is to inform you, the parent, of what is happening at Walker Valley High School, It is to inform you of where your child should be academically, We want to establish a partnership between you, your child and us.

3 Important Dates for 11th Grade Students
December End of Course Exams December Final Exams January 4 School Begins for 2nd Sem. February 1 TCAP Writing Assessment March 20 ACT for ALL 11th graders* March 26 – 30 Spring Break April 6 & 9 Easter Break May Gateway Exams May Final Exams May 23 Last Day of School

4 ACT TESTING All students in Tennessee in the 11th Grade are required to take the ACT. This test is given here on March 20, 2012 In order to qualify for an Honors Diploma in Tennessee students must make benchmark scores in all four categories of the test. Those scores are English 18; Social Studies 21; Math 22; Science 24

6 Academics At this time your child should have at least 12 credits in order to graduate on time with their class. They are required to have 28 credits to graduate. If they are not at this point they may be eligible for Credit Recovery if they have a failing grade of 60 – 69 and the recommendation of their teacher. Credit Recovery is available only in the core areas. Credit Recovery meets Monday and Wednesday after school 3:30 – 4:45 and Tuesday and Thursday morning 7:30 – 8:10

7 What to Do Your child should check with their counselor to check their credit situation. They should check to see if there is an opportunity for Credit Recovery. If this is not an option they should be checking for opportunities to make up the class.

8 The Facts 68 Juniors* failed a class at the end of the 1st Nine Weeks
12 failed a Foreign Language required for graduation 43 failed an English course required for graduation 5 failed a Social Studies course required for graduation 12 failed a Math course required for graduation 24 failed a Science course required for graduation *Some students have failed multiple courses

9 It is not too late! Students must dig in and ask for help
Teachers are available for tutoring before school, after school and during lunch. It will take hard work on the part of the student in conjunction with asking for help from their teachers. In order to help you keep up we established a Parent Portal for you to check grades and attendance. Information Sheets are available out front

10 What is our purpose? We want to give your child every opportunity to graduate. We want to communicate with you on a regular basis. Please watch our website daily for announcements etc.

11 Now is the Time Begin looking at college choices based on what your child wishes to major in – look for the best program for them. Begin looking at information the college requires and when it is due so it will not slip up on you. Be academically prepared. Look at the future, check out the career your child is interested in and find out what it takes to for that to be a career choice.

12 Important Things To Remember
Be involved with their registration for their senior year, their choice of college, their choice of career and their choice of friends. Keep up with their grades on the Parent Portal and if they are Dual Enrollment students you must deal with your child on grades. Do not let students take their senior year off challenge them to work hard. Keep in touch with their teachers. Watch our website there is important information on there for you.
