The Popular Press – 1840 – early 1900’s Advances in technology make the newspapers profitable and self-sustaining (profit driven) AP is established in 1848 Sensationalism – Hearst vs. Pulitzer

4 American Media - Magazines of Opinion
Starting in the 1850’s a number of national magazines were formed Gained momentum around 1900 (Progressive Era) “Muckraking” evolved into investigative reporting Eventually sensationalism in the news faded in the early 20th Century

5 American Media – Electronic Journalism
Radio 1920’s and TV 1940’s Ability for political figures to speak to the public without being edited or filtered Evolution From Fireside Chats to Network News to The O’Reilly Factor

6 American Media - Internet
Ultimate free press in regard to politics Cannot be regulated Cannot be censored Beginning to play a large role in politics In 2004 approx. 1/5 of all year olds got their campaign news from internet Same % got their news from network evening news or newspapers

7 Evolution Party Press – very few people had contact with any type of media Popular Press – mass-circulation created mass-politics Magazines of Opinion – interest groups began to enter into the political spectrum Electronic Journalism – politicians can initiate contact with the public without party or interest group help Internet – politicians, voters, and activists can now converse with and influence others
