Important Terms Sacred: valuable things, objects, or places in religion Shrines: a place that is sacred to a holy person Altars: a table or flat-topped blocks of stone where offerings to a god are made. Commemorate: to celebrate or honor something or somebody Brazier: a type of heater that consists of a pan or stand.

The Great Temple of the Aztecs
A temple is a special building where ceremonies And rituals are held as a part of worship. The Aztec people worshipped many gods. The temple was a created with many Levels to represent their view of the World. The Aztec people believed That the world, like the temple, Had many levels. The two most important gods, Tlaloc and Huitzilopochtli were The two most Important gods. Their names meant Sun and fire.

How did Aztecs view the world?
The Aztecs believed that every part of the world was sacred. Their gods typically represented elements that you would see in nature such as the earth, wind, fire, and water. The temple got its’ shape from the surrounding mountains of Mexico, and represented how the Aztecs saw the world. Aztecs believed that there were 13 levels of the universe above them, and 9 levels of the World below them.

Aztec Market Place A few helpful terms:
Subjects: persons who lived under the rule of a king Tribute: a form of payment that was not money, but an object of value. Typically subjects gave tributes to the king or nobles. Merchants: people who traveled the trade routes to buy and sell things.

Aztec Market Place The market place was located in the capital of Mexico, Tenochtitlan. Trade routes were established throughout all parts of Mexico and stretched to other empires outside of Mexico (*and outside of the Aztec Empire). The people who traveled these trade routes in search of specific items were known as “pochteca”.

The Market Place About 20,000 people visited the market every day.
Supplies were brought to the market by canoe. Market places were social areas where people visited, ate food, bought slaves, bought food, or purchased needed items.
