Finding Evidence

2. Before you begin finding evidence, keep a few things in mind …

3. Research is not supposed to be easy!

4. Is this the typical invitation you get for weekend fun?
Hey, do you want to go do research this Saturday night?

5. Sources will not get up and introduce themselves!

6. Expect to dig through many possible books and articles to find the information you need!

7. Nothing is written in stone—not even your planning map!

8. So if your research opens a new path, feel free to explore it!

9. This research project will require six different sources.

10. Works Cited. Find the name(s) of the author(s).
Order of names matters.
If you have more than three authors, use the name of the first one and then the abbreviation et al.
Find the name(s) of editor(s) only if they are on the cover of the book.
Capitalize the title correctly. You must use MLA format.
Italicize the title.
Find he city where it was published.
Often the publisher is on the book spine.
Use the most recent year for year of publication.

11. Find database articles.
Database articles are in collections. Experts have already determined that they are reputable sources.
Log into Atlas, then choose Search the Library on the MyAtlas tab.
Choose Databases A-Z.
Good places to start are Academic Search Complete, LexisNexis Academic, NewsBank, or SIRS Researcher.
Enter your key words in the search box. Check the Full Text box and select Article.
Review the articles that appear. Do not choose articles that are over your head, too short, or too long!
Be sure that the articles you find address the missing parts of your planning map.
Find and print four database articles. This work is due at the beginning of our next class.
