Chapter 2-2 Warm-Up 1. What are two examples of things that are not matter? 2. What is the difference between a compound and a molecule? 3. What is a heterogeneous mixture? 4. How many atoms and molecules are in the following formula? 3C12H22O11

Chapter 2-2 Properties of Matter
3
Physical Properties Physical Property – Can be observed or measured to help identify a substance. Color Shape Size Density Melting Point Boiling Point
4
Melting Point Melting Point – temperature and pressure at which a solid becomes a liquid State – the physical form in which a substance exists Solid, liquid, gas
7
Boiling Point Boiling Point – temperature at which a liquid becomes a gas Has to have constant pressure - altitude Properties the same regardless of mass or volume of the substance
10
Density Density – ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of a substance Determines what rises and sinks How much “stuff” is in something
13
Density Unit – g / cm3 If 10.0 cm3 of ice has a mass of 9.17 g, what is the density of ice?
14
Chemical Properties Chemical properties are related to the specific element that make up substances. Describes how a substance changes into a new substance
16
Reactivity Reactivity – ability of a substance to combine chemically with another substance
18
Flammability Flammability – ability of a substance to react in the presence of O2 and burn Creates new substances Ash Smoke
19
Characteristic Properties
Both physical and chemical properties that describe a substance
