Traditional agriculture relies on low-input polycultures
Lower risk from disease, weather devastation
Better for the soil/varied nutrient demands
Slash & burn agriculture = 10 to 30 year recovery of area but utilizes natural fertilizers and lessens water demand (different root depths)
Green revolution/industrial farming
Monculture – genetically modified, high yield crops – depletes soil, vulnerable
Industrial fertilizers and irrigation
Very energy intensive

Rising steadily as more nations become developed with increasing incomes (think of China)
56 Billion animals are raised and slaughtered for food each year
~50% of worlds meat comes from rangeland & enclosed pastures
Other 50% is from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs)
Grain requirements for a nation increase as they move to animal-based diets
Countries forced to secure their grain sources or land sources as their demands rise
