4 Goals of Research4Life Programmes (R4L)
To connect developing world researchers with the international scientific community To reduce the ‘publishing gap’ and improve the quality of locally produced articles and journals To ‘ensure public access to information and protect fundamental freedoms, in accordance with national legislation and international agreements’ (UN Sustainable Development Goal #16) These goals facilitate two way communication between researchers/publishers in the developed and developing world. 09 April 2018

5 Primary Target Audiences
Eligible categories of institutions are: national universities professional schools (medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health, dentistry) research institutes teaching hospitals government: ministries and agencies national medical libraries locally based non-governmental organizations (NGOs) All permanent and visiting faculty, staff members and students are entitled to access and can obtain the institutional User Name and Password. Recently, eligibility for not-for-profit agencies has been broadened. Those primarily funded by or affiliated with international agencies or non-governmental organizations are not eligible. 09 April 2018

11 Hinari Portal This is the HINARI Portal. Through each one of the tabs, menus and links you can browse thousands of information resources. A special version of PubMed is also included. The same portal is also available in the following languages: Arabic, English, French, Russian, Portuguese and Spanish. 09 April 2018

13 30 publishers: Note that the initial pages of each programme are similar. This also is true for the Contents pages once you have used the unique User Name and Password for your institution. Remember that each programme that your institution registers for has a unique User Name and password. These User Names and Passwords can be distributed to all staff and/or students at the institution. 09 April 2018

14 AGORA Portal The Portals of each programme are similar.
This also is true for the access to the journals once you have logged in with your institutional User Name and Password. Each programme issues separate User Name and Passwords to access their contents. These User Names and Passwords can be distributed to all staff and/or students at the institution. 09 April 2018

18 ARDI (Access to Research for Development and Innovation )
Online portal to access development and innovation research; ARDI was launched by the World Intellectual Property Organization in and joined R4L in 2011 Supports researchers in developing countries in creating and developing new solutions to technical challenges faced on a local and global level More than 1000 registered institutions. Up to 7,500 journals; 22,000 books; 25 other resources; 40 publishers’ content [January 2018] 09 April 2018

21 GOALI (Global Online Access to Legal Information)
Launched 06 March 2018, GOALI is a programme to provide free or low cost online access and training to law and law-related content to R4L eligible institutions The aim of GOALI is to improve the quality of legal research, education and training in these countries - to strengthen legal frameworks and institutions and further the rule of law. The programme initially has access to over 10,000 legal titles from 60 publishers. Partners include the International Labour Organization (ILO), Brill Nihoff (founding publisher and initiator of the programme), Lilian Goldman Law Library at Yale University and Cornell Law School Library. 09 April 2018

All programs have access to ‘Google like’ Summon Search Tool – search results include journals and books Almost all programs have country specific profiles that link to what the publishers grant access to in the country None of these tools index all the program specific Research4Life journals Access is at the top of the ‘Content’ page – for all the programs; note the option to the Country specific search 09 April 2018

A list of Summon (country) search sites is displayed. Go to a specific country profile on the list and click on the link. You will have access to ejournals and ebooks that, via OARE or another programme, the publishers have granted access to in the specific country. ADD country specific access 09 April 2018

28 Basic Search (OARE) Summon notes that OARE is the client which means that there will be access to full-text articles and e-books - that are available to the institution. This database is a product of Proquest. A similar search page will appear for the specific programme that is opened. 09 April 2018

34 Key Hints – Registration Process
Telephone and Fax fields are numeric. No blank spaces, nor symbols should be used. Comments and Activities fields have a maximum number of characters (255). If possible, include an institutional address (e.g. or not ) Once you register for OARE, you will have access to all 5 programmes – as of March 2018. Lastly, the whole validation and processing takes from two to four weeks. You can check your registration by writing the Research4Life helpdesk: 09 April 2018

Note: These lists do not include all the registrations in each country – only registered universities and professional schools. There is a possibility that your institution is registered for HINARI or AGORA but not OARE. If you find out that your institution is registered, contact the librarian who should be able to supply the username and password.
