Manhattan Project Finn Shimmin 7C1 After the surrender of Germany in World War II the allies needed a weapon powerful enough to make the Japanese surrender. The Manhattan project was the first program that was aimed to equip the country with nuclear weapons. After $2 bn funding ($26 bn today) the project was complete. A test in New Mexico had been a success . The scientist finally unveiled the ‘Little boy’ and the ‘Fat man’ these were dropped in Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Einstein initially proposed the idea and signed a letter written by a fellow scientist to discuss the topic of fusion sent to the President Roosevelt. So a board of scientists met in secret. They soon discovered that splitting a uranium atom would create an enormous amount of energy and then could be used as a bomb.
