Law of the Sea Convention
-signed 1982, enacted 1994 -international agreement (167 countries and the EU have joined)

Function/ Issues Affected
-defines the rights/responsibilities of nations’ use of oceans and the management of marine natural resources -national rights are limited to a specified belt of water extending from a nation’s coastlines (usually 3 miles) -all waters and resources beyond national boundaries are considered international waters (free to all, but belong to none)

Regulation and Enforcement
-the International Maritime Organization, International Whaling Commission, and International Seabed Authority all regulate the convention
