1 Newton’s 3 Laws 3 Laws of Motion

2 3 Types of Forces Balanced forces—forces are equal…5N=5N?
Unbalanced forces—forces are not equal…5N=7N? Opposing forces—forces are exerted in opposite directions.

3 First Law of Motion If the forces acting on an object are balanced, an object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will remain in motion. Example—ball sitting on a field.

4 Second Law of Motion The acceleration of an object depends on the force acting on an object and the mass of the object…unbalanced forces. Example—Hitting a homerun…or NOT!!

5 Third Law of Motion For every action there is an equal or opposite reaction. Example—Jumping rope or swimming.

6 Assignment: Answer the following questions.
When you are sitting in a chair at rest, are the forces acting on you balanced or unbalanced? Explain. You and a child who has half your mass are standing on ice. If the child pushes you, who will have the larger acceleration? Explain. When you jump from a boat, the boat moves backward as you move forward. Explain which law of motion is being observed.

7 Homework: Explain how gravity affects each of Newton’s three laws.
