3 The History of Political Parties in the United States
The Founding Fathers hoped that political parties would not form in the United States because they feared that rivalry between parties would threaten American unity America has a two-party system – elected government officials have almost always come from just two political parties Smaller parties do exist, though Roles of political parties: Make citizens more aware of public issues Nominate candidates to political office Hold primary elections Finance political campaigns Write platforms expressing their political ideas and future plans Help legislators to organize and pass their legislative programs

5 Democratic Party A political party that believes that the federal government should take a more active role in people’s lives, particularly those who are in need One of the two parties that make up the two-party system

6 Republican Party A political party that believes that the federal government should play a small role in people’s lives; they favor lower taxes and less government spending One of the two parties that make up the two-party system

7 Socialist Party A political party that believes people should own and control industry through democratically controlled public agencies, cooperatives, or other cooperative groups A third party

8 Communist Party A political party that believes the government should control all production and distribution of goods and working people should control their own lives and destinies A third party

9 Libertarian Party A political party that believes in individual freedom and the only purpose of government is to protect this freedom A third party

11 Nominate candidates Description Impact Political parties nominate candidates for public office. The candidates believe in the party platform. Provide options of candidates to society Society then determines which candidate they will elect

12 Influence Policy Description Impact Members of congress are members of political parties and they work to pass laws that support their party’s platform. A political party’s platform and ability to influence policy impacts the types of laws that are passed

13 Unite Government DESCRIPTION IMPACT A party can link its members at the federal, state and local levels of government to achieve big goals for the party. Provides a way for people that identify with a particular party to connect with each other

14 Create Balance DESCRIPTION IMPACT The two parties create balance in the government by working hard to protect the ideas in their party platform. The two parties keep each other in check. Impacts how laws are made in government

15 Inform Citizens Political parties run campaigns for candidates.
DESCRIPTION IMPACT Political parties run campaigns for candidates. They run ads, create pamphlets, post blogs, and help candidates give speeches. Impacts the way society views candidates for office
