SWBAT describe the impact of sleep loss on human beings and various sleep disorders (sleep apnea, narcolepsy, insomnia), along with theories of dreaming (latent/manifest content, information processing, physiological, cognitive)

5 Sleep Loss US Navy and National Institute of Health (NIH) studies indicate the average adults sleep debt is hours After repaying the sleep debt, they settled into 7.5 to 9 hours of sleep a night – mood improvement and energy improvement were noted High school and college students are considered especially sleep deprived Chronic sleep loss is defined as getting less than 7 hours of sleep a night for more than 2 weeks

The inability to fall asleep or stay asleep multiple weeks in a row Narcolepsy an uncontrollable and unpredictable falling into sleep; can vary in severity Sleep apnea Characterized by temporary cessation of breathing and repeated awakenings Night terrors Characterized by high bodily arousal and appearance of terror; often not remembered Typically occur during NREM-3 instead of REM sleep Sleepwalking and talking – occur during NREM-3, and so typically disappear after childhood (but are more likely for sleep deprived people)
