2. Essential Climate Variable (ECV) Inventory
The Global Observing Systems Information Center (GOSIC) provides a clearinghouse that facilitates the discovery of and access to authoritative data, products, metadata and information for the GCOS, including a utility to access ECV data.
The ECV Data Access Matrix provides access to authoritative ECV datasets and information.
Authoritative datasets have been submitted to critical appraisal and curated for quality and are properly documented by metadata.

Will be updated with information from the Status of the Global Observing System for Climate , Oct 2015 (GCOS-195)
Will be linked to the GEOSS Geoportal once it has been updated.
The GOSIC
tracks access
statistics.

The ECV Data Access Matrix provides:
one-stop utility to access authoritative ECV data and information for the 50 ECVs.
access to ECV information on network status, current network capabilities, data gaps, etc. Information will be updated per the Status of the Global Observing System for Climate – October 2015 (GCOS-195)
information such as Digital Object Identifiers (DOI), Metadata Landing Pages, Data Stewardship Maturity Scoreboards, link to BAMS State of the Climate datasets and products, Subject Matter Expert (SME) information, etc.

Users would benefit from a more comprehensive list of authoritative datasets available for each of the ECVs.
The satellite-based data questionnaire and on-line form were developed by NASA Langley Systems Engineering Office (SEO).
This questionnaire was also adapted to in-situ by NCEI and CICS.
An SQL web interface to the satellite and in-situ ECV data base could be hosted on the GOSIC.

Dataset properties:
Coverage, horizontal, vertical & temporal resolutions, accuracy, stability, scientific process, CDR generation, stability & homogeneity link, GCOS compliance assessment, independent peer review compliance, maturity index
Dataset Access:
Contact , data format & access, dissemination, data documentation link, data release period (months)

Discussion:
Is there a need for an in-situ based ECV inventory like there is for a satellite-based inventory?
If so…the in-situ questionnaire and form have been generated and would need to be distributed to the data centers and input processed. But this effort needs to be sponsored!
