1 Respiratory System In Class Notes:

2 Function: (30.5) The respiratory system exchanges gasses between your blood and the air.

3 Organs Involved: (30.5) Nose: keep unwanted materials from entering the lungs. Mouth: another opening in the face that air can go through. (if you don’t know what your mouth is, et some help) Pharynx: where the food and air cross. the pharynx is always open unless you swallow. Epiglottis: momentarily covers the air pathway and prevents food from entering. Larynx: (vocal cords) Trachea: (windpipe) the air pathway. Bronchi: the 2 tubes that fork off from the trachea. Lungs: the balloon like structures that inhale and exhale air.

4 Sequence of breathing:
You inhale through the nose and mouth. The air enters the pharynx and then moves to the larynx or voice box. The air then enters through the longest tube, the trachea, which goes two separate ways into the two lungs. (connecting the lungs and the trachea are the bronchi.) In the lungs the bronchi break into smaller tubes called bronchioles and at the end of the bronchioles there are tiny air sacs called alveoli. In the alveoli oxygen goes into the bloodstream and CO2 leaves the blood and goes backwards through the process until it is exhaled.

6 Parts you should know:

7 How is breathing regulated?
Breathing is controlled by the medulla in the brain. When there is too much CO2 in the blood the medulla will increase the breathing rate in order to get rid of the excess CO2.

8 Name at least 3 disorders & provide a description:
Acute Bronchitis: inflammation of the airway, caused by viral infections or exposure to irritants. Asthma: Diseases affecting airways that carry air to and from the lungs. Wheezing, tight chest, etc. Swine Flu: Disease caused by pigs that have type A Influenza. Constantly changes.

9 What effects does smoking have on the respiratory system?
Can cause lung cancer (P.S you just lost the game) Makes it hard to breath Can kill you

10 YOU LOST THE GAME!
