Goal: to visualize FNET data
Background Goal: to visualize FNET data FNET is a frequency monitoring system composed of a network of FDRs FDRs, or Frequency Disturbance Recorders, are small boxes that record frequency values across the grid and report back to FNET Data visualization allows people to get an intuitive sense of the dynamics of a power system in ways that raw data would never allow Visualization allows us to easily pinpoint the location of an event An FDR FNET

FNET Data FDRs provide four important types of data:
Location of the FDR Frequency of the grid at the FDR’s location Voltage angle at the FDR’s location Exact time of frequency and voltage angle readings This data is critical to the visualization process This information is recorded in the format of a text file: North American FDR locations

Unwrapping and processing angle data Freq. Ang.Dev. Ang.Osc. “memd” function to isolate oscillations Interpolate data with griddata function Load and subtract coastline Draw 3D contour map using “surf” function FOR loop to animate drawnow

Oscillation Case April 27, 2011- large hail storms hit east Tennessee
11 large 500kv lines were taken down by the storm The storm resulted in extended outages and damage to roofs and cars
