1
Enzymes Are special proteins that are involved in chemical reactions.
Also known as catalysts- speed up reactions Have a specific shape Work like a KEY in a LOCK The key represents the “ENZYME” The keyhole in the lock represents the “ACTIVE SITE” The lock represents “SUBSTRATE”
2
(lock) (key) Lock and key model of enzyme-only the right substrate (lock) can interact with a certain enzyme (key)
4
Enzymes speed up chemical reactions by lowering the amount of Activation energy-amount of energy needed to start a reaction
5
Enzymes Enzymes operate at an ideal temperature and pH. For example, most enzymes in the human body operates their best at 98.6 degrees. Temperatures higher will destroy the enzymes. Substrate-whatever the enzyme is working on to build or break apart Active site- spot where the substrate binds with the enzyme.
6
Enzymes Enzymes either build large molecules like DNA, and proteins to make muscle OR they BREAK molecules like the enzymes in your spit that begin to digest food! Your cells have as many as 2,000 enzymes! A reaction would take 1,500 years without an enzyme and 5 seconds with one! nimations/Enzyme%20activity.html
