Intro the Metric System
Going the Distance Intro the Metric System
2
Going the Distance /16/15 Key Question: What would you need to know about the metric system and what type of measuring tools would you use to build a skate park? Initial Thought:
3
Evidence 1: Skate Park 1. Take notes, as you watch the video, about what type of structures you would like in a skate park.
4
Evidence 2: Skate Park Goal: Write your goal down.
Goal: To create and design a structure for your tech deck using the supplies provided. With each structure, you will set a goal. For example: To roll the furthest distance, travel the highest distance, or do a certain trick. Goal: Write your goal down. Go back to the lab stations, measure the blocks, draw and record the measurements of the blocks in your journal.

Creating a Skate Park Online
Go to You are going to create a free account You can use your school address Example: You the same password that you use to login to your computer.
6
Creating a Skate Park Online (continued)
Once you understand how to use Tinkercad, you may begin creating your skate park. Keep in mind what types of blocks you have and the measurements of the blocks. Your skate park needs to be to scale. Please save your design! Basically, you get to be Skate Park Engineers!!!
7
Building Your Skate Park
In your groups, you will try to build each other’s skate park with the supplies provided by looking at their design on Tinkercad. You will practice with the tech deck to see how well you achieved your goal. Evaluate what you need to change or modify. Record Results What do you need to do differently to achieve or improve your goal? What part of your design worked well?
8
Redesign Go back to Tinkercad, and redesign your skate park to incorporate your new changes. When you are done, go back and rebuild your modified design. Record your modifications.
9
Analysis Questions What are the units of measurements in the metric system? What went well with your skate park design? What were some problems you had with your skate park designs? How did/would you fix them?
10
Summary Remember: paragraph format
What did you think about the metric system before this lesson? What did you learn about the metric system from this lesson? (Minimum of 4 sentences!!!) What are some further thoughts or questions you have about the metric system.
11
Reflection Do you think the whole world should use only the metric system? Why or why not?
12
Big Idea The base units for length, volume, and mass in the metric system are meters, liters, and grams.
