2 Patriarchy & Roman Slavery
Society and Inequality in Eurasia & North Africa

3 Slavery How did the inequalities of slavery differ from those of the caste system? The caste system – you were born into it. You can get out only by converting to Buddhism (or dying). Slavery was an idea of people owning other people.

4 Greco-Roman Slavery How did Greco-Roman slavery differ from that of other classical civilizations? Greco-Roman slavery was more widespread and was a social staple of Greek and Roman society. It served as a diverse and notable practice fueled by religious and moral protections. Social staple means “very important to society”. Example in class was “staple crops” being very important crops.

5 Patriarchy in China In what ways did the expression of Chinese patriarchy change over time, and why did it change? Brought forth by allowing a female empress Wu and the end of the Han Dynasty into the Tang Dynasty. Gave women more rights due too changes of Confucian ideas and beliefs.

6 Patriarchy in Greece How did the patriarchies of Athens and Sparta differ from each other? Women had more liberty living in Sparta than in Athens thanks to different government structures and a militaristic society (in Sparta). Because of Sparta’s militarism, the men were often away fighting. This left the women behind to run businesses and family estates/households.

7 CCOT – Second-Wave Civilizations
What changes in the patterns of social life in second-wave civilizations can you identify? What accounts for these changes? Religions forming and the formation of empires and social classes (such as the caste system) accounted for changes in the second-wave civilizations. Second-wave civilizations are also called “classical civilizations” and are the ones found in 600 BCE – 600 CE: Persia, Greece, Rome, Han China, Mayans, Gupta & Maurya India. These second-wave civilizations have much larger empires and much larger religions than those found in Period 1…and both the empires and the religions have much more power over the people.
