The colonists revolted against the British because of increased British attention to the colonies, increased taxes, issues with trade, and increased tension between the colonists and the British government and army. The Declaration of Independence stated unifying ideas of American democracy. Many people played important roles as government leaders, military leaders, and diplomats to lead the colonies to victory during the American Revolution. Some colonists were loyal to Britain during the American Revolution. European countries came to the aid of the colonies during the American Revolution and helped the colonists gain victory.
