Cancer A group of more than 100 diseases that develop across time
Can develop in virtually any of the bodies tissues Hereditary & environment factors can contribute to its development About 1 in 3 people will be diagnosed during their lifetime

Cancer Risk of developing cancer if there is a family history is about 50/50 More likely to be diagnosed as a person ages Why? Exposed to carcinogens longer Many types, some occur more than others Risk factors that people engage in such as smoking or sun exposure

How cancer develops Genes that start and stop cell division are damaged or mutated The cell continues to divide and a tumor develops These tumors may interfere with normal function of organs

Cancer vocabulary Benign – tumor that is noncancerous
Malignant- cancerous tumor Metastasis/metastasize – when cancer has moved Carcinogen – cancer causing agent (mutates start/stop genes of the cell cycle)
