1 Course Scheduling Overview
School Year February 28, 2018

2 Goal: Educate all on the course selection process to select appropriate courses towards achieving each student’s high school and post-secondary goals.

3 Requirements to Consider
Graduation Project is an OASD requirement for graduation. Get started now! Class of 2020 and beyond must pass all three Keystones. Supplemental Course Project Based Assessments

4 Graduation Requirements
Subject Credits Required English 4.0 Math 3.0 or 4.0 Science Social Studies 3.0 Health and Physical Education 1.5 Electives 10.0 Total 25.5 Mention personal finance/seminar, PCA

5 Progression from Grade to Grade*:
Promotion: Recommended: 9th Grade to 10th Grade 6.0 credits 10th Grade to 11th Grade 12.0 credits 11th Grade to 12th Grade 18.5 credits 12th Grade to Graduation *Students will stay with the grade level homeroom regardless of credits earned. Please be aware of graduation requirements and stay on track! 25.5 credits All students must complete the Graduation Project Class of 2020 and beyond*** must score Proficient or Advanced on Algebra 1, Biology, and Literature Keystone Exams or Project Based Assessment

6 Scheduling for 2018-2019 Steps in the process:
HS Teachers have entered course recommendations for core subjects into PowerSchool. HS Students enter elective choices into PowerSchool. Guidance meets with individual students. MS Teachers will enter course recommendations for core subjects into PowerSchool. MS Students will complete paper course requests for electives. MS students will enter requests w/guidance – April 3rd and 4th. Administration totals requests and builds master schedule trying to meet student needs and requests.

7 What you MUST request: Current 8th Grade for 9th Grade year:
8.0 credits Must request: English Math Science Social Studies Health and Lifetime Fitness TCB (Taking Care of Business), Principles of Personal Growth and Development, and Personal Computer Applications (or ATP Seminar)

8 What you MUST request: Current 9th Grade for 10th Grade year:
8.0 credits Must request: English Math Science Social Studies Health or Personal Computer Applications if you did not take it in 9th grade *Recommend an additional PE course

9 What you MUST request: Current 10th Grade for 11th Grade year:
8.0 credits Must request: English Math Science Social Studies

10 What you MUST request: Current 11th Grade for 12th Grade year:
1.5 credits Must request: English Science or Math Any course needed for Graduation

11 What you SHOULD request:
Students that plan to attend college: 4 years of English, Math, Science, and Social Studies at CP level or above At least 2 consecutive years of World Language Consider dual enrollment opportunities through DCCC, Cecil College, Goldey-Beacom College, PA School of Health Sciences, West Chester Univ., Thaddeus Stevens

12 What you SHOULD request:
Students that plan to attend trade or technical school: 4 years of English, Math, and Science 3 years of Social Studies Electives that will support your acceptance to school

13 Applying to TCHS: Current 9th, 10th, and 11th grades only
Students must complete the online application for TCHS by March 31 Students must meet requirements to apply and to remain enrolled once accepted.

14 TCHS Requirements Grades: Students must pass 3 of 4 core subjects (Math, English, Science, Social Studies) each year Attendance: Students may not miss more than 10 days per semester Discipline: Students that commit Level IV and V violations will be reviewed

15 Scheduling Events and Timeline Current HS Students
HS students have assembly on Feb. 27th. HS Students receive Course Scheduling Worksheet on Feb. 27th. Course Selection Guide and other scheduling materials are posted on the HS webpage. HS Students may begin to enter course requests and review teacher recommendations in PowerSchool on Thursday, March 1st. Deadline for course requests is Tuesday, March 6th.

16 Scheduling Events and Timeline Current HS Students
Guidance will meet individually with students in Social Studies classes from March 7-23 to review course requests. Course verification letter sent home by April 9th. Course verification letter must be signed by a parent and returned by April 18th. If this is NOT returned, your courses will be assigned and you may not get your requests.

17 Scheduling Events and Timeline Current 8th Grade Students
HS team met with 8th grade students and teachers to explain process on Wednesday, Feb. 28th. PG staff will make recommendations in PowerSchool for Math, English, Science, Social Studies, and Spanish. Course request worksheet for electives needs to be completed, signed by parents, and returned to PG HS Guidance Counselors will meet with students to review all course recommendations (April 3-4) Course verification letter sent home in April 9th. Course verification letter must be signed by a parent and returned by April 18th. If this is NOT returned, your courses will be assigned and you may not get your requests.

18 New Courses for English 11 AP course: Language and Composition Social Studies: offering academic, college prep and honors levels of American History, World History, and Modern Civics AP Computer Science Principles Course (PLTW) Classical Mythology Economics Business Law and Management Intro to Business is replacing Business Enterprise Advanced Computer Applications is replacing Personal Computer Applications II TCB(Taking Care of Business) is replacing Personal Finance Principles of Personal Growth and Development is replacing Freshman Seminar
