1964
The Ford Mustang, a two-seat, mid-engine sports car, is officially unveiled by Henry Ford II at the World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows, New York, on April 17, That same day, the new car also debuted in Ford showrooms across America and almost 22,000 Mustangs were immediately snapped up by buyers. Named for a World War II fighter plane, the Mustang was the first of a type of vehicle that came to be known as a “pony car.” Ford sold more than 400,000 Mustangs within its first year of production, far exceeding sales expectations.

4. Day 9
The main idea is what the OVERALL passage is about. Sometimes there will be more than one main idea. As we read, especially in non-fiction, we want to read and see what the whole thing is about.

5. What does main idea mean
What does main idea mean? Here it is asking for the main IDEAS (plural) from the passage. Well, we know it was about Neil Armstrong landing on the moon. The passage began with the landing and gave details about what they did upon landing. The rest describe their exploration of the moon and it made a point to tell about Armstrong getting his samples. A-eating a meal was not the main idea in this passage. B-well, this is more likely. It talks about landing and then it talks about their exploration and collecting samples…this is what I am thinking the answer is. C-this is just a detail, not really the overall main idea. D-again, this is not an overall main idea because the passage was not about his getting ready to go to the moon. The answer is B.

6. Ok guys…how many details do I choose. That’s right-TWO
Ok guys…how many details do I choose???? That’s right-TWO! We said the main idea was that they landed the LM, explored and collected samples so let’s look for the evidence-BE CAREFUL because we want evidence for ONLY the main idea we chose. A supports the landing…it’s a possiblity. B is about checking the system of the Eagle-this is NOT the answer. C talks about the first meal but this is not the main idea-this is NOT the answer. D is about a camera recording but that is NOT the main idea. E describes what they saw when they explored. F highlights the first priority was to pick up the samples and this supports the main idea…good possibility. I need a piece of evidence to support all MAIN IDEAS so A supports the landing and F supports the collection of the evidence. I know that E also describes the idea of exploring, but this really is just describing and I need evidence for collecting samples so I am choosing A and F!

7. Day 10
Ok, text structure in non-fiction. The kids know the basics of these: Cause/effect Compare/contrast Problem/solution chronological

8. Text Structures? I love text structures  These are found in non-fiction-let’s do a quick review-what is sequential order? It is also known as chronological and it is when the text goes in time order or in some specific order. A lot of times dates are used. Cause and effect is when something happens and as a result something else happens (you don’t tie your shoe, you trip over your shoelace). Compare and Contrast is when we find what is the same and what is different. Problem and Solution can get confused with cause and effect the difference is a PROBLEM is presented-it has to be something that can have a solution or steps to a solution. Cause and effect are events and problem and solution is when we are faced with a problem. Ok, now lets review our reading of paragraphs 3-4 since that is what it is asking us about. (next slide)

9. A says cause and effect about why the astronauts had to rest before exploring the moon but they didn’t rest. So, A can’t be the answer. B says chronology (sequence, time order) of what the astronauts did when they landed-well par. 3 details what they did for the three hours after they landed and then 4 goes on to say they ate and prepared to walk on the moon. These supports B (might be it!) C is certainly not the answer! No way are we comparing Earth and Moon climate-a for sure elimination. D is about problem and solutions but the astronauts have not been faced with a problem in either of these paragraphs. The best answer is B the chronology text structure.

10. Ok, now we have to go back and look to find another paragraph(s) that is chronological. ( I put these on the next slide)

11. A is 6-7, B is 8, C is 10-11, and D is 15 Remember we are looking for chronological (sequence, time-order)
Read 6-7 this does show an order-he came down the ladder, he lowered the camera, stepped off the rung…this might be our answer!
Read 8-this is not a sequence it is a cause and effect
Read this presents a problem(the scientists didn’t think they could walk on the surface but Armstrong was able to answer the question to their concern.
Read 15-this is comparing the earth to the moon
Since we are looking for chronological our answer is A paragraphs 6-7 

When having to read a chart, we want to help our kids look at all the information. Start with pointing out the information that tells what the chart is, then tell kids that we have to often be able to predict and infer based on the information in the chart. The two questions that are posed are for the kids to talk about in pairs and then for you to ask them to answer out loud with evidence.

15. Time to Write About Our Learning!
Nothing helps kids retain information better than writing about it! We want them to use both pieces of text so they can use both to cite their evidence from. We will explore the relationship of the Sun, Moon, and Earth.

We have read two texts about the Moon phases, tides and eclipses. All of these occur because of the relationship they share with the the Sun and Earth. Identify the relationship between the Moon, Earth, and Sun. Use specific evidence to describe these relationships.
Ok, we have already talked about this-if kids are having a hard time with the topic statement-help them restate the first part of the question. Ex-The Sun, Moon, and Earth share a cause and effect relationship. Moon phases are caused by….. (kids will then need to describe how each of these-moon phases, tides, and eclipses-occur.)
