1 Energy Transfer within Ecosystems

2 FOOD = Energy All living organisms require energy
Ecosystems include organisms that meet their energy needs in a variety of ways: Producers Consumers Decomposers

3 PRODUCERS (AKA Autotrophs)
Make their own food with energy from Sun (photosynthesis) or with chemicals (chemosynthesis)

4 consumers Eat other organisms Four Types: Herbivores—eat only plants
Carnivores—eat only other consumers (animals) Omnivores—eat both plants and consumers Scavengers—eat only DEAD consumers

5 Name that Consumer Type!!!

6 DECOMPOSERS Break down dead organic matter into nutrients

7 How do organisms get energy from food?
Cellular respiration breaks down food molecules, making stored energy available to the cell

8 Photosynthesis VS. Respiration
Inputs of photosynthesis are outputs to respiration and vice versa

9 Trophic levels Organism’s position in a food chain 3 2 1

10 Trophic Levels Pyramid shape represents two quantities:
Amount of energy per level Amount of biomass per level ~90% LOSS of energy from one level to the next (via heat, cellular use, inedible parts, etc.) Limits number of levels Limits number of organisms in each level

11 Food Chains VS. Food Webs
Series of organisms transferring energy between trophic levels Example: All the food chains in one ecosystem More species in a food web = more stable ecosystem Example:

12 Trophic Levels and Pollutants
Bioaccumulation Biomagnification Absorption and retention of an environmental pollutant in one organism throughout its life The absorption, retention, & movement of a pollutant through trophic levels Higher trophic levels are more affected
