SUICIDE RATES: ARE THEY AFFECTED BY NATION’S ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE?
Chen Liang EAS4480 4/20/17
2
hIGH GDP = LOW SUICIDE RATE?
Objective Discover whether or not suicide rate is associated with nation’s economic development (GDP) Two countries are investigated: United States and United Kingdom
3
dATA Suicide and self-inflicted injury data in US and UK from 1960 to 2014 Scaled by population Gross domestic product(GDP) in US and UK from 1960 to 2014 Scaled by deflator
5
US SUICIDE RATE TREND Slope Confidence Interval Least-square
-1.5*10-19 [-8.6*10-19,2.9 *10-19] Bootstrap -1.99*10-19 [-9*10-19,3 *10-19]
6
Histogram of the least-squares regression slope generated using the bootstrap method. The red circles represent the corresponding synthetic normal distribution for the same mean and standard deviation. Note the inclusion of positive slope values on the right tail. Its not normal distributed but left skewed Extreme values
7
Correlation Coefficient
GDP SUCIDE RATE 1 SUICIDE RATE P-VALUE GDP SUCIDE RATE 1 0.6108 SUICIDE RATE P value is greater than 0.05, so there is no significant correlation between Suicide Rate and GDP in US
8
No Period Found!
9
UK SUICIDE RATE TREND Slope Confidence Interval Least Squares
-1.78*10-17 [-2.4*10-17, -1.3*10-17] Bootstrap -1.8*10-17
10
Histogram of the least-squares regression slope generated using the bootstrap method. The red circles represent the corresponding synthetic normal distribution for the same mean and standard deviation.
11
Correlation Coefficient
GDP SUCIDE RATE 1 SUICIDE RATE P-VALUE GDP SUCIDE RATE 1 1.7*10^-8 SUICIDE RATE P value is less than 0.05, so there is significant correlation between Suicide Rate and GDP in UK
12
No Period Found!
13
Conclusions No significant correlation between GDP and suicide rate in US Suicide rate shows negative trend with increasing in GDP in UK No cycle found in either GDP or Suicide rate
