Compromises of 1820 & 1850 Compromise of 1820: Admitted Missouri as a slave state and created Maine as a free state. 36’30” line of latitude became border for slavery. 3 Kansas-Nebraska Act 1854 Citizens of the new territories would decide whether to permit slavery or not (popular sovereignty). Written by Stephen Douglas.

4 Dred Scott Slave who sued the U.S. government to win his freedom. He lived in an area of the U.S. where slavery was illegal. Supreme Court ruled against him saying blacks would never be citizens of the U.S. and slavery was a right anywhere in the U.S. Upset Northerners because the Supreme Court left open the possibility of slavery in the North.

5 Lincoln-Douglass Debates 1858
Seven debates between the two men who most likely would run for U.S. President in 1860. Using his education, Lincoln causes Douglass to admit he still favors popular sovereignty. This went against the Dred Scott decision, and greatly upset the South. Debates cause the South to elect two more democrats to run against Lincoln in 1860.

6 John Brown’s Raid on Harper’s Ferry
Abolitionist known for starting fights in Kansas- Neb. Territory. With 22 men, John Brown took over a federal weapons armory in West Virginia. He planned on using the weapons to invade the South and kill slave owners.

7 John Brown’s Raid Brown and his men were quickly surrounded and trapped in the armory. The U.S. gov’t sent the army (led by Robert E. Lee) to end the raid. The army stormed inside killing Brown’s men and arresting him. Brown was found guilty of treason and hanged for his actions.

8 1860 Presidential Election
Lincoln is elected 16th President with just 40% of the popular vote. The Democrats decision to have three nominees causes their vote to split. Lincoln’s name wasn’t even on the ballot in Southern States.

10 Secession - the act of withdrawing from an organization, union, or political entity.
A little over a month after the elections South Carolina is the first state to secede from the Union. Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, quickly follow. On March 2, 1861 Texas becomes the 7th state to secede. The original Confederate Flag known as “The stars and bars”

11 Fort Sumter, South Carolina
Union military fort in South Carolina, that was told to surrender by the Confederacy. Lincoln refused to surrender the fort over to the enemy. On April 12th, 1861 Confederate soldiers bombarded the fort for 33 straight hours. The fort finally fell into Rebel hands. The official start of the U.S. Civil War.
