Brothers, I was not able to speak to you as spiritual people but as people of the flesh, as babies in Christ. 2 I gave you milk to drink, not solid food, because you were not yet ready for it. In fact, you are still not ready, 3 because you are still fleshly. For since there is envy and strife among you, are you not fleshly and living like unbelievers? 4 For whenever someone says, “I’m with Paul,” and another, “I’m with Apollos,” are you not unspiritual people?

The Corinthians thought that they, more than other people, were ready for deeper truths & teachings because of their giftedness

The Corinthians thought that their devotion to certain leaders showed their wisdom

Paul intentionally withheld teaching from them because of their divisions & relational brokenness

We can be (often are) self-deceived in our evaluation of our own maturity
Our giftedness is not the primary qualification for or hindrance to ministry
Relational health is a key indicator of our progress in God’s wisdom (the “deeper things”)
Relational dysfunction will impede our ability to grasp & absorb biblical teachings
Teaching & knowledge are very important
