Figure 1 NAIP-NLRC4 Inflammasome Activation within the Cytosol of Intestinal Epithelial Cells During Salmonella infection, the NAIP-NLRC4 inflammasome can activate either Caspase-1 or Caspase-8, triggering an IEC-intrinsic response that limits bacterial burden. Caspase-1 activation results in a coordinated rapid cell death (pyroptosis) and cell expulsion, whereas Caspase-8 activation results in cell expulsion without coordinated cell death.
