11 What is pH? 7 14 Increasingly acidic Increasingly basic
pH stands for “power of Hydrogen” pH is a scale to indicate how acidic or basic a liquid is It is related to the percentage of hydrogen ions (H+) in a substance The pH scale ranges from 0, highly acidic, to 14, highly basic A substance of a pH of 7 is neutral, neither acidic nor basic 7 14 Increasingly acidic Increasingly basic © Charmagne Quenan 2016

12 What Are Acids and Bases
Donate H+ Have a pH less than 7 Have a sour taste Feel astringent (drying) Common examples include sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid Bases: Accept H+ Have a pH greater than 7 Can have a bitter taste Feel slippery Common examples include ammonia and sodium hydroxide Both can be corrosive and can conduct electricity – both can be dangerous, and so touching and tasting aren’t the best way to test pH! © Charmagne Quenan 2016

13 What is Litmus Paper? Litmus is a dye that comes from lichens
Blue litmus turns RED in an acid It stays BLUE in a base Red litmus turns BLUE in a base It stays RED in an acid © Charmagne Quenan 2016

14 Examples of Acids and Bases
