1 What are Acids and Bases
Monday, November 10th, 2014

2 Do Now Homework Read pages 199-201 (What are acids? What are bases?)
In your definition for acid and base give 2 examples of each Define indicators and give 2 examples of indicators Do Now Create a new tab in the Matter Unit “Acids + Bases” What is an ion? What is an acid? What is a base?

3 Gradespeed Grades have been posted on Gradespeed
Averages came out about 1% higher on gradespeed If you would like to retake the test, you only need to retake certain standards, not the whole thing. I have made a retake for each concept

4 Concepts to retest Part 1 (4 points) Part 2 (4 points)
Common outcome of all chemical changes Part 2 (4 points) Physical/chemical changes Part 3 (4 points) Products/Reactants Part 4 (4 points) Oxidation numbers Part 5 (4 points) Ionic/Covalent Bonds Part 6 (4 points) Law of Conservation of Mass Part 7 (4 points) Synthesis/Decomposition/Single/Double Replacement Part 8 (2 points) Endothermic/Exothermic Reactions

5 Objectives SWBAT differentiate between acids and bases on a molecular level. SWBAT identify the properties of acids and bases. Essential Questions What are acids and bases on a molecular level? What are the properties of acids and bases?

6 Acids and Bases Readings on your tables 11 questions
#3 is not in the text, you need to think about what a proton is and what a hydrogen ion is. We will go over them after This goes in your new unit Acids and Bases Write down questions and answers

7 Answers Svante Arrhenius’ definition of an acid is a material that can release a proton or a hydrogen ion (H+). We can call H+ a hydrogen ion or an proton. A hydrogen ion is the same as a proton because a hydrogen atom only has 1 proton and 1 electron. When the hydrogen atom loses its electron to form a hydrogen ion it is just 1 proton.

8 Answers Svante Arrhenius’ definition of a base is an material that can donate a hydroxide ion (OH-). We call OH- hydroxide. An acid is a material that donates a proton and a base is a material that can accept a proton.

9 Answers The Lowry-Bronsted definition is broader because it includes some interactions that might not have been considered acid-base interactions. A hydronium ion is H3O+. Diagram on board A hydronium is an acid because it has an extra proton or hydrogen ion.

10 Properties of acids Release hydrogen ions Neutralize bases
Corrode metals Turn blue litmus paper red Taste sour

11 Properties of bases Release hydroxide ions Neutralize acids
Denature proteins (makes them feel slippery) Turn red litmus paper blue Taste bitter

12 Essential Vocabulary We will use the Arrhenius definition
Acids release hydrogen ions. Bases release hydroxide ions.

13 TCAP question An unknown substance turns blue litmus paper red. We can conclude that the substance is a… Acid

14 Answer the Essential Question
What are acids and bases on a molecular level? What are the properties of acids and bases?

15 Exit Ticket Acids Bases What is an acid?
What are 2 properties of acids? Bases What is a base? What are 2 properties of bases?
