1 Interactions of Earth’s Sphere

2 interactions

3 Key vocabulary Ecosystems - community of plants and animals that interact with one another and with their physical environment (land, climate, soil, water and nutrients) Interactions Feedback – influence each other – unpredictable or irreversible Climate Influences: Ocean currents Precipitation Human activity Volcanic events Solar events Tectonic events

4 Can you think of some examples of interactions between two or more spheres?
Atmosphere Geosphere Hydrosphere Biosphere

5 Can you think of some examples of interactions between two or more spheres?
Atmosphere Geosphere Hydrosphere Biosphere Ozone change Ozone change El Nino Ozone change; photosynthesis Hurricanes; tsunamis; volcanoes; wave action Volcanic eruptions Hurricanes; tsunamis; tectonics; erosion; volcanoes Earthquakes; wave action Hurricanes; tsunami; coal, nutrient cycles; volcanoes El Nino Waves Wave action photosynthesis Photosynthesis

6 In order to maintain and improve their existence, humans interact with and influence Earth systems.
Some examples: Hydrosphere – water pollution Biosphere – over-fishing, agriculture, forestry, algae in lakes Geosphere – mining Atmosphere – air pollution Interactions – climate change

7 Human systems Created by humans for individual and collective wants and needs System that are created by humans include: Human settlements Transportation routes Communication systems Economics Infrastructure Energy

8 Collage Assignment For this activity, you can choose a specific interaction between humans and the natural environment. Showcase your ideas using words, quotes, and pictures you find in magazines. You will then write a 6-8 sentence paragraph describing your collage, explaining the interactions in your collage, and why you chose specific words/pictures. Self-assessment and peer-assessment

9 Criteria Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Level 4 Knowledge- the collage represents a clear environmental theme and critical thinking around the issue is clear in their collage creation; the paragraph is clear, well-written, and describes the pictures/word choices in the collage. - critical thinking has been made with minimal accuracy and effectiveness with the word choices and use of visuals. - critical thinking has been made with some accuracy and effectiveness with the word choices and use of visuals. - critical thinking, for the most part, has been made with accuracy and effectiveness with the word choices and use of visuals. - critical thinking has been made with a high degree of accuracy and effectiveness with the word choices and use of visuals. Presentation/Creativity- the layout and overall project reveal a great deal of creativity, organization, and thought; ideas are represented in a unique and eye-catching manner. Does the project look thrown together or well-thought out? - the theme and visuals used show limited creativity and effectiveness. - the theme and visuals used show some creativity and effectiveness. - the theme and visuals used show considerable creativity and effectiveness. - the theme and visuals used show a great degree of creativity and effectiveness.
