1 To write an effective description.
Lesson Objective To write an effective description.

2 Starter What sort of equipment would a time traveller need?

3 Starter Consider the following list of equipment. In groups, choose five items from this list that you think would be essential for time travel. Make sure you can explain your choices! Watch Laptop/iPad/Tablet Encyclopaedia Dictionary Jacket Backpack Food Camera Portable Charger with batteries Mace

4 Let’s read through an extract from ‘The Time Machine’…

5 I drew a breath, set my teeth, gripped the starting lever with both hands, and went off with a thud. The laboratory got hazy and went dark. Mrs. Watchett came in and walked, apparently without seeing me, towards the garden door. I suppose it took her a minute or so to traverse the place, but to me she seemed to shoot across the room like a rocket. I pressed the lever over to its extreme position. The night came like the turning out of a lamp, and in another moment came to-morrow. The laboratory grew faint and hazy, then fainter and ever fainter. To-morrow night came black, then day again, night again, day again, faster and faster still. An eddying murmur filled my ears, and a strange, dumb confusedness descended on my mind.

6 What is being described here? How is it being described?

7 If I were in a time machine I would…
With the person next to you complete a mind map similar to this, using key words you’d use to describe each area: Flashing See nervous Feel (emotion) If I were in a time machine I would… cold Feel (touch) Hear thunder

8 TASK Last lesson you created your own time travel device.
Imagine you were able to use your time travel device. Write your own description of the first time you time travelled on it. You may want to use some of words from your mind map. Remember to consider: How you felt (emotions) What you heard (sounds) What you saw (sight) What you experienced (sense of touch)

9 Let’s share some of your descriptions.
Plenary Let’s share some of your descriptions. Which descriptions sounded the best? Why?
