Mentoring Explain why we believe in mentoring as opposed to tutor time. 11/24/2018
2
Why? Some pupils are doing very well at school
Some pupils are under achieving Some pupils are coasting We would like to improve the ‘study ethos’– its not cool to be seen to want to do well Lots of reasons

What is a mentor. What is the nature of the mentor/mentee relationship
What is a mentor? What is the nature of the mentor/mentee relationship? What is a squad leader? Talk about the focus on driving up standards. More academic, learning behaviours etc. rather than behaviour. Should be for life not just for Christmas. Not an advocate for when mentee is in trouble. You have those ‘difficult’ conversations about the choices a student has made. 11/24/2018

Mentoring Entitlement Squad time Additional Paired mentor
Mentoring is made up of an entitlement element consisting of squad time and individual mentor interviews which focuses on overall academic progress and if necessary additional paired mentoring from the `Flourish team which is dependent on need. All Manor staff are encouraged to be mentor, including support staff. Mentors are grouped by Strands and lead by the Deputy Strand leader. Paired mentor 11/24/2018

Mentor our existing 1:1 system Using ragged data tracking system
Real evidence and un-equivocal so pupils can’t ‘bluff’ their way out Checks for impact at short intervals Parents integral to the process 15/20 minute individual interview twice every ½ term Personalised to the individual

Squad leader New this year
Enabling students to be part of a larger group Facilitates BfL process Creates opportunity to further independent learning behaviours Sell the vision for Squads 15 minutes every day. Consistent programme throughout the Academy

Actions to achieve objectives and
Personal Challenge Objectives Each ½ term 2 mentor sessions Actions to achieve objectives and expected grades Academic/Strand mentoring operates on an annual cycle beginning and ending in July for the majority of students. Those who have changed mentors will have reviewed their Personal Challenge objectives with their old mentor in July but will set new ones with their new mentor in September. Personal Challenge meeting are held over a 3 week period and it is expected parents will attend.

July 2014– Personal Challenge Goals set
July 2014– Personal Challenge Goals set. Begin mentoring log for each student, attach to SIMs as linked document (Mentor Log ) Update mentor log each interview July – Personal Challenge Goals review and set for The basic process for evidencing mentoring. DSLs quality assure these. 11/24/2018

Mentoring Log This is the document used,
DSLs ensure mentors have a copy. A copy is sent home via to parents after each interview. There is an example of this completed in the mentor handbook which is available electronically in the ‘policy backpack’ in maraki 11/24/2018
10
Each ½ term 1st mentor meeting – establish actions to work towards these goals, complete student mentoring log. 2nd mentor meeting – review progress data with student, complete student mentoring log. Stress the objectives are long term ie for a year and should take a year to complete. The actions are shorter term and need to be checked. These actions are what will ensure the student achieves the objective and will most likely focus on specific pieces of work. Mentors should contact home for non attendance of mentor meetings and follow BfL strand guidelines for sanctions. 11/24/2018

After each data trawl identify blue/green/amber/red students. Complete Tracking document and Whole Group Mentor log, return to Deputy Strand leader. 11/24/2018
12
Tracking Map Sheet This is done by the mentor for the whole of their mentor group. DSLs use it to monitor overall progress. (set up because SIMs and the data team weren’t able to easily provide the information necessary) Students identified as RED go into ASSERTIVE mentoring for at least ½ a term. Explain what assertive mentoring is.

Works because it is relentless
Assertive Mentoring Works because it is relentless
14
Leaves nothing to chance
Weekly contact – students and parents Students identify issues, cross referenced with teacher’s opinions Establish reasons for underachievement Agree actions – weekly tasks Checked next week
15
What more do you need in order to hold really brilliant interviews?
Room, calendar, relationship, method of communicating interview dates to student…….. 11/24/2018

Paired Mentoring Flourish paired mentoring is designed to support students with barriers to learning and other needs to help them succeed in the Academy and to achieve academic success across all strands. Does not replace normal mentoring. Paired mentoring is for a short time only and focuses on particular areas of difficulty eg attendance. The aim is to modify the behaviour the student is displaying so they no longer need a paired mentor. Normal academic mentoring should continue . The Flourish mentor should keep the normal mentor well informed and closely involved with every aspect of paired mentoring 11/24/2018
