3 Literary Terms Theme (p. 759) – the truth about life that gives meaning to the story Theme is almost never stated directly The theme is not the same as the subject

4 Literary Terms Subject – topic of the story. It can usually be stated in one word. Theme must be stated in at least one sentence.

5 Literary Terms Archetype – a very old imaginative pattern that appears in literature across cultures and is repeated throughout the ages. An archetype can be a character, a plot, an image, a theme, or a setting.

6 Literary Terms Internal Conflict – Occurs inside a person’s mind
External Conflict – a character struggles against a force of nature, another character, or a whole society

7 Quickwrite Describe a journey that you or someone you know undertook. Describe the purpose of this journey, any hardships encountered, and the journey’s outcome. This journey can be an actual journey or a symbolic one.

8 As You Read . . . The journey that Phoenix takes is an archetype used to make observations about life. As you read, make notes about the stages of Phoenix’s journey and how they correspond to the stages and events of life.

9 Activity Using your notes on the correlations between Phoenix’s journey and life, create a five paragraph essay in which you compare the journey to life. Make sure your essay makes smooth transitions between paragraphs. Cite specific references to the story and publish your essay as instructed.
