1
Lesson Starter What is the job of the retina?
Explain how the size of the pupil changes and the reason for this Label the diagram of the eye D A B E C
3
Learning Intention To state the meaning of long and short sight
To describe how to correct long and short sight
4
Walk towards your partner until you can read the letters clearly
How good is your sight? Walk towards your partner until you can read the letters clearly
5
What type of lens does our eye have?
Normal eye A normal eye focuses the rays of light on the retina. What type of lens does our eye have?
6
Short Sightedness Distant objects appear blurred
Eye shape, genetics, damage from screens
7
Short sightedness How could we fix this?
The light from far away objects is focussed short of the retina. The image on the retina is therefore blurred. How could we fix this?
8
Correcting short sight
An optician can correct short sight by giving a patient CONCAVE lenses. This allows the light to be focused on the retina Lens Light focused on Retina Concave lens Cornea Optic nerve
9
Short Sightedness: Copy
Short Sight WITHOUT prescribed lens An optician can correct short sight by giving a patient CONCAVE lenses. This allows the light to be focused on the retina. Short sight corrected with CONCAVE lens
10
Long Sightedness Close objects appear blurred Shape of eye, age
11
Long Sightedness How could we fix this?
The light from nearby objects can’t be focussed onto the retina (it would be focussed on a point behind the retina). The image on the retina is therefore blurred. How could we fix this?
12
Light focused on Retina
Correcting Long Sight An optician can correct long sight by giving a patient CONVEX lenses. This allows the light to be focused on the retina Lens Light focused on Retina Convex lens Cornea Optic nerve
13
Long Sightedness: copy
Long sight without prescribed lens An optician can correct long sightedness by prescribing a patient a CONVEX lens which will make light focus on the retina. Corrected long sight with CONVEX lens
14
Plenary Explain what happens in someone’s eye if they are: A) Short sighted B) Long sighted What type of lens would correct each of these and why?
