1
Balancing movement and exchange for better cities
Steven Burgess, Principal MRCagney June 8, 2016. @burgess_steven
3
Is this balanced OK? Why do we do this?
4
Its not all the engineers fault…
Said the engineer to the planner
5
Is this a perfect street?
6
Unsustainable Suburbs
NEW suburbs in Melbourne are so poorly designed that residents face an epidemic of chronic diseases such as obesity and depression that will cost the health system millions of dollars, a State Government inquiry has been told.
7
Where are the quality diverse neighbourhoods?
Good for health Good for jobs Good for environment
9
Market reaction to roadspace
Will build more sprawl in reaction to better access Will change mode away from bus/bike/train etc Will demand more parking space Overall growth at risk
10
Simple ways to tell if you have enough parking supply
Price – is the price of parking getting too high – over $20 - $30 per day? Is the public transport completely full at minimum headways? Are people walking more than 1km to their destination? Are developers wanting to add EXTRA parking to their developments? Are the private sector lining up to build car parks in Rockhampton.
11
Growing prosperous towns are:
Attractive to millennials + Gen Y; Offer medium/high density living; Have low car ownership; Have high urban walking activity;
12
What is stopping you? Sprawl Minimum parking rates
Prioritising movement over exchange
13
Who would be in local government?
You have to fix everything….but promise to change nothing! What is the reward for being brave?
14
Living without choice is not living
Locking people in the car, is not fair, its not sustainable and its not right…
15
Touchstones for managing movement to make better places
Parking is just a traffic generating land use Find some touchstone exemplar Streets – keep asking yourself, “Why do I like them?” “Why are they good?” Make communities, not just suburbs Allow the land use to prosper – to be excellent Get purpose and function right before moving on to form Street design is not road design Street hierarchy and road hierarchy are not related The traffic model is your slave, not your master Link, place, origin and destination are inextricably linked
