1 TECHNICAL WRITING – THE BLENDED LEARNING INITIATIVE
ENGLISH 393 TECHNICAL WRITING – THE BLENDED LEARNING INITIATIVE The Final Project

2 REQUIREMENTS As discussed, your final project is a formal, professional document written to your primary audience in one of the following forms: Technical Report Recommending a Solution Feasibility Study Offering Several Solutions Manual Providing Step by Step Guidance

3 PRIMARY AUDIENCES Your audience should have the power to effect the change you are recommending. Your readers are interested, informed readers; they have a stake in the arguments you are making. Contacting your primary audience ahead of time, if possible, can provide important insight for approaching your project.

4 REPORT COMPONENTS FRONT MATTER: Memo addressed to me
Cover Letter addressed to your primary audience Cover Page, with descriptive project title Table of Contents, including all sections, graphics, and back matter

5 REPORT COMPONENTS MEMO:
The memo will be addressed to me and will detail your goals for this assignment, highlight your experiences, and provide analysis of your research. You should update me on changes made to or information learned about your audiences, or anything else, since the proposal.

6 REPORT COMPONENTS COVER LETTER:
Your cover letter will be addressed to your primary audience, or one representative member of your primary audience. It will provide a brief, attention-grabbing description of your final project.

7 FINAL PROJECT COMPONENTS
Technical Reports & Feasibility Studies: Introduction of the problem/topic, with your secondary research Results & Findings describing the research you conducted, the reasoning behind it, and interpretations of your research results Recommendations based on your research, described in detail; the focus of your report Conclusion summarizing your main points and stating what comes next for your audience

8 FINAL PROJECT COMPONENTS
Manuals: Introductory text to your Primary Audience, describing your understanding of the topic & applying your primary and secondary research to the subject The Manual written for your Tertiary Audience, either complete or excerpts (option for excerpts must be discussed with Michelle and approved)

9 REPORT COMPONENTS BACK MATTER:
Works Consulted List (a bibliography of your sources; should begin on a separate page) Appendices Transcripts of interviews conducted (either full or detailed summaries), including dates/times, names, locations Tabulation of surveys used in your research Data tables, charts, graphs Glossary for terms that may be unfamiliar to any members of your audience members, including me

10 “HOW LONG IS THE FINAL PROJECT?”
The Report (see slides 7 & 8): Minimum 3000 words/10 full pages of double-spaced text equivalent Project design elements (including layout and single/double spacing choices) should be based on audience need/preference Graphics, Transcripts, Addendum, Back Matter, Memo, Cover Letter, and other materials are not part of the required minimum word count

11 SPECIAL NOTE FOR PARTNERSHIPS
Each student will write a memo addressed to me Each student will conduct a minimum of two forms of primary research Word counts are doubled: each student should contribute the equivalent of 3000 words to the body of the final project The Table of Contents should include a column that identifies who wrote which pages/sections
