Fact or Statistic Examples
More than six million people died in the Holocaust. Tobacco kills over twenty times more people than murder. In 1999, five out of every 100 high school students dropped out of high school. By the eighth grade, thirty percent of all teens have used illegal drugs.

Quote There is an old saying which states that “your schooling may be over, but remember that your education still continues.” British comedian Douglas Adams once said, “I seldom end up where I wanted to go, but almost always end up where I need to be.”

Background information
Now that you have your reader’s attention, you are ready to introduce your topic with some background information. Relate your attention-grabbing sentences to your overall topic sentence. This is usually the most difficult part of the introduction. Define term you will be using!

Thesis statement This is easy! Use the SAD method!
S=Subject (what is your topic?) A=Attitude (how do you feel about your topic?) D=Development (give reasons to support your attitude) We will combine these sentences into one sentence to make your thesis statement.

Example Thesis Subject: Kurt Vonnegut’s life and work
Attitude: Vonnegut is iconic as a writer of satire and science fiction. Development: Experiences during WWII Used humor to address serious political and humanitarian issues. Kurt Vonnegut’s experience in World War II led to his becoming one of the great science fiction and satire writers of the twentieth century.
