Dissemination Working Group Eurostat – Unit B4 Digital dissemination – Jukka PIIRTO

2 Data collection & results
Method: Web search Yearbook identification/traits Title: Keywords ("statistical yearbook", "annual abstract", "statistical abstract") + country name + year Size: 200–1000 pages, typically 500–700 pages Author/publisher: NSI or international organisation Content: tables + definitions (minimum), charts & maps, descriptive/analytical text, data sources & methodology, policy/societal context, static/dynamic infographics; promo video Method: Disclaimer: I may not have found everything. I think, however, that the big picture is good enough. Results: No surprises in YB identification/traits Title: "Abstract" in title: UK, USA, Cyprus, Malta Size: Is 1000 pages a psychological limit?

3 Data collection & results

4 Data collection & results
Yearbook evolution ICT development has questioned the role of these once venerated flagship publications: Are they dinosaurs? 13/33 = 39 % of ESS members have discontinued their yearbook (abruptly or gradually), but the majority of 61 % continue 30/33 = 91 % of ESS members have a reduced size (typically 50–100 p.) paper/PDF general overview publication (19 countries have titled it <Country name> in figures) Evolution: Interesting Next year Eurostat will discontinue its yearbook, 36 %  39 % Reduced size publication: All but Germany, Ireland and UK; Sweden: web publication, though

5 Note: Different years, especially Belgium (1994) and Malta (2000).
