Literacy Research Memory Skill Challenge
Quadratic Functions โ Expanding brackets and Factorising Literacy Research Memory A quadratic expression is written in the form: ๐ ๐ฅ 2 +๐๐ฅ+๐ where ๐ฅ is the variable, a and b are the coefficients of the terms involving ๐ฅ 2 & ๐ฅ and c is a constant value. a โ 0 but b and c can have zero values and the expression will still be a quadratic type as the variable still has a highest power of 2 e.g. 3 ๐ฅ 2 โ4๐ฅ+1 & ๐ฆ 2 โ9 are examples of quadratic expressions. Explain what are the differences between a function, an equation, an identity. Find one real life application of using quadratic functions to help model them. Write a brief summary of this application. Skill Challenge 1. Expand the following expressions and simplify fully when possible a (๐ฅ+4)(๐ฅ+5) b) (๐ฆโ3)(๐ฆ+7) c) (3โ๐ก)(2+๐ก) 2. Factorise the following quadratic expressions and show checking by expanding the answers you find! a) ๐ฅ 2 +5๐ฅ b) ๐ฅ 2 โ 6๐ฅ c) ๐ฅ 2 โ3๐ฅโ10 3. Write an expression for the area of this compound shape in its simplest terms 4. Jenny thinks that (x โ 2)2 = x2 โ 4. Do you agree with Jenny? Explain your answer. 5. How would you explain to someone that factorizing the quadratic expression ๐ฆ 2 +6๐ฆ will only require a single bracket as part of the answer and not the two brackets quite often associated with quadratic expressions? Factorise 3 ๐ฅ 2 +14๐ฅ+8 Factorise ๐ฆ 2 โ25 Expand and simplify as far as possible the following expression (3๐ฅโ5) 2
