1 Literacy Research Memory Skill Challenge
Quadratic Functions โ€“ Expanding brackets and Factorising Literacy Research Memory A quadratic expression is written in the form: ๐‘Ž ๐‘ฅ 2 +๐‘๐‘ฅ+๐‘ where ๐‘ฅ is the variable, a and b are the coefficients of the terms involving ๐‘ฅ 2 & ๐‘ฅ and c is a constant value. a โ‰ 0 but b and c can have zero values and the expression will still be a quadratic type as the variable still has a highest power of 2 e.g. 3 ๐‘ฅ 2 โˆ’4๐‘ฅ+1 & ๐‘ฆ 2 โˆ’9 are examples of quadratic expressions. Explain what are the differences between a function, an equation, an identity. Find one real life application of using quadratic functions to help model them. Write a brief summary of this application. Skill Challenge 1. Expand the following expressions and simplify fully when possible a (๐‘ฅ+4)(๐‘ฅ+5) b) (๐‘ฆโˆ’3)(๐‘ฆ+7) c) (3โˆ’๐‘ก)(2+๐‘ก) 2. Factorise the following quadratic expressions and show checking by expanding the answers you find! a) ๐‘ฅ 2 +5๐‘ฅ b) ๐‘ฅ 2 โˆ’ 6๐‘ฅ c) ๐‘ฅ 2 โˆ’3๐‘ฅโˆ’10 3. Write an expression for the area of this compound shape in its simplest terms 4. Jenny thinks that (x โ€“ 2)2 = x2 โ€“ 4. Do you agree with Jenny? Explain your answer. 5. How would you explain to someone that factorizing the quadratic expression ๐‘ฆ 2 +6๐‘ฆ will only require a single bracket as part of the answer and not the two brackets quite often associated with quadratic expressions? Factorise 3 ๐‘ฅ 2 +14๐‘ฅ+8 Factorise ๐‘ฆ 2 โˆ’25 Expand and simplify as far as possible the following expression (3๐‘ฅโˆ’5) 2
