Pocahontas: Real? Pocahontas, a Powhatan, was instrumental in building peace between the English colonists and Native Americans in North America. Pocahontas was 10 or 11 years old when she made friends with the settlers at the Jamestown Colony in Virginia. She was a frequent visitor to Jamestown and brought the settlers gifts of food or furs to trade. She was especially attached to a young man named John Smith. Pocahontas played an important role in American history. She saw to it that the colonists received food from the Native Americans so that the colony at Jamestown would be successful. She is also said to have saved the lives of several colonists. She was a vital link between the Native Americans and the residents of Jamestown.
